For the public record, let it be stated and perhaps even defended that ICANN has
abused its position. The list of evidence is long. The failure to provide funding
for elections is just the latest in eyebrow-raising decisions from ICANN. The process
by which its directors presently find themselves in situ, the Veresign deals, the
TLD application process in its entirety, the insider dealing and the seemingly endless
chain of corruption that are found surrounding this organisation raise constant and
consitent questions about its credibility. Fingers now point to very heart of American
democracy. Someone is to blame and someone is accountable. If the US government continues
to turn a blind eye and sanction such an overwhelmingly dictatorial approach to the
international internet community then it stands to lose control if it period. Similarly
if the US government is unable to police these organisations that it sets up properly
then the internet can and will simply move elsewhere. The A root is the most popular
internet root, but it is not the only one. If China announced .web support or even
.usa support (!!!) and claimed these for itelf then America would be able to do nothing
about it while one billion citizens happily registerd their domains in the name of
the new free market. The US presently has its trousers down and its showing off emmbarrasing
underwear! Lets not for get that it took ICANN five years of deliberation just to
agree that there was even a demand for new TLDs and then it promptly raised $2.5M
in application fees. Its pathetic, dishonest, corrupt and American. Now hands up
who's proud of it?
