But what about corporate and private sponsorship?  Earlier this year, it was reported that corporate and private sponsorship helped keep the lights on at ICANN.  The companies that contributed funds were perceived by many to have special inside tracks and influence over the organization. Although ICANN cannot afford to disengage from corporate and private sponsorship, it should continue to set limits on these types of gifts to avoid appearing controlled by any special interests.  The correlation between being transparent in cost recovery and maintaining the confidence of the entire Internet community is profound.
