I recently had an occasion to endure the mighty hand of Network Solutions. One of
my clients Domain names was failed to be paid on time. No excuse for this I know,
but when I attempted to rectify this situation and transfer the Domain name over
to a competing Registrar, Dotster, the transfer was DENIED by Network Solutions.
I had to contact them (NSI) via phone and was told in so many words that they would
NOT release the name or allow ANY changes to be made to the name until I paid them
another $70 for another 2 years of registration. This sounds like extortion to me
and the other registrars have no power to overcome this. The whole reason for attempting
to transfer the Domain name to Dotster was the non-competitive fees charges by Network
Solutions. I feel that this is a grave injustice on the part of Network Solutions
and on this note, I feel that there should be a standarization among all registrars
concerning the transferance of Domain Names. We, who pay the fees, OWN the names
NOT the registrars. We should be able to control them.
