Please keep in mind that this issue is not the simplistic battle of virtuous privacy advocates vs. evil overly intrusive governments that some people make it out to be. Like it or not, there are some rather unsavory people on the net, many of whom do nasty things to individual users, from bestiality spam to stealing your bank account by phishing to stalking. I can tell you from personal experience that WHOIS info, even in its current rather imperfect form, is very useful when tracking them down.

I think it would be more productive to step back and try to understand why people register domains, and what you do or don't need your own domain to do.
