Subject: Update regarding Candidate's call/posting of questions summarized for
Candidates
Thanks to the candidates and BC members who participated in the Candidates
discussion this a.m.
Members asked questions of the candidates, following a short statement,
candidate responses to a number of submitted questions.
A version of the questions below [based on submitted questions from members]
was asked of the Councilor candidates, and also of Chris Chaplow, V.Chair,
Finance and Operations - elect in this a.m. call. Only question 4 was directed
to Mr. Chaplow. The questions below are an attempt to capture the intent of the
questions asked, but without benefit of the transcript for the exact question
wording. The intent matches the questions asked.
Members asked candidates for examples of where contracted parties might find
synergy, or discord, with BC positions; how their past experiences may
advantage or disadvantage the BC, and heard details of the past involvement of
both candidates in the BC, as well as key priorities from both candidates for
the role of the BC, overall. For t hose who missed the calls, please refer to
candidate statements, feel free to email either on or off list to ask further
questions until CoB 11/3, and look for the posting of the MP3 -- tomorrow and
transcript-- usually takes a few days.
Approximately 1/4 of our members were on the call. I have asked the Councilor
candidates to provide their personal contact details to members, for any follow
up questions. According to the discussion today, they may choose as well to
provide any written follow up to the questions they received.
The discussion period closes CoB Wed, 11/3. Once the vote opens, no other
election communication will occur on the BC lists.

Questions for Councilors: These questions were not asked verbatim, but this
captures the general questions provided by members:
1) The role of the Council/and Councilors has changed due to GNSO Improvements.
  a) What are your thoughts about the new role in policy management and how the
Councilors can adjust to the role? b) Do you believe that you understand and
can commit to the role of representing the Membership, versus personal, or
corporate interests, in fulfilling the role of an elected councilor?
2) Do you have suggestions about ways that the BC can improve its
interactions and consultations across constituencies on key policy topics of
priority to the BC?
3) The work load for Councilors is significant, and the need to consult
internally with the ExComm and Membership takes additional time, on top of
preparation for Council calls, and participating in Council activities. a) Are
you able to commit to the time needed to prepare for, attend and participate
actively on behalf of the BC in the Council calls and face to face ICANN
meetings.b) Can you commit to being involved with the EXCOMM and membership on
consultation calls regarding the Council agenda and key policy topics?
4) The BC is comprised of a number of European and North American association
and corporations, with a limited number of Latin American and African and Asian
or Middle Eastern members. Some member associations have small and mid sized
business members/executives from developing countries with a keen interest in
participating in ICANN, who are interested in participating in ICANN's
activities and initiating activities of relevance to develop input to ICANN
from their region/country, but who may need assistance in travel sponsorship to
attend one of ICANN's face to face meetings: a) Are you able to support
within the Council and within the BC, the need for ICANN to support a BC or CSG
initiative that would support bringing a limited number of SMEs from
developing countries to the ICANN meetings, if that is an initiative supported
more widely by the BC or CSG? b) how might outreach activities be strengthened
to broaden and build BC membership from entities from developing economies and
countries?c) do you have a vision for building and expanding the BC membership
overall?
