As a small business owner, and an active netizen, the thought of variable
pricing for domain names is abhorrent.
I have a couple points, that are logically valid though not stated with
excessive elegance:
1. Having a central authority to handle domain name registration is necessary.
It solves many potential problems.
2. ICANN is that authority and should not be acting as a for-profit entity.
Governmental organizations have a history of 'killing the goose that laid the
golden egg'. This appears to be a similar case. This authority should not be
vested in an agency that has a pure profit motive, as this play seems to have.
3. Because certain individuals have built brand names around a certain domain
does not give the central authority the right to profit from that hard work.
4. If the cost of running ICANN is increasing, then increase the fees across
the board, don't penalize success.
Regards,
Lee
