Verisign being awarding .com registry renewal

Just wondering if there was any competitive bidding process involved in this 
decision?  Considering:

I've been in the registrar business end (Registrar Constituancy), for over 10 
years and have owned a dot com domain owner for over 10 years as well (Public 
Constituancy).

I've attended the ICANN meeting hosted by CIRA in Montreal Canada as a member 
of the Registrar Constituancy several years back.
