I mostly don't pay any attention to what ICANN does. I just kinda trust
they're keeping the trains running on time and making sure that changes to
the DNS happen in an orderly fashion. If you just throw a bunch of strings
in the root willy nilly without a sufficient heads up and a REAL risk
mitigation plan in place, a lot more folks are going to pay a LOT more
attention to what ICANN does. If you play this wrong, it could be an
embarrassment that undermines trust in the internet and gives fuel to those
who believe that ICANN's function should be handled by the UN or something
similar. Don't make me, and more importantly others, pay more attention to
ICANN because this is handled in a glib, rushed and haphazard way. I don't
think the outcome of additional scrutiny will be particularly pleasant.
