Dear ICANN –
I strongly hope that you reconsider the proposed rules governing companies that
provide WHOIS privacy services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services
Accreditation Issues Policy document).
As a journalist, critic, and writer I've often found details like whois
information used to stalk, harass, threaten, and in some cases assault people
like myself and my colleagues. This is an even more worrying and frightening
reality for women, people of colour, and those who live under government
regimes where criticism means jail time or violence. Privacy registration is
one of the few tools available to people to protect themselves from possible
violence or online harassment, and taking that away from anyone without
court-order is a horrible policy decision.
I urge you to respect internet users' rights to privacy and due process.
Private information should be kept private. Thank you.
Joshua Meadows
