Dear ICANN –
Regarding the proposed rules governing companies that provide WHOIS privacy
services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services Accreditation Issues
Policy document):
With the current subpoena procedures already in place, the Category C-1
recommendation *needlessly* puts small business owners and other individuals at
risk of harassment. The changes would discourage legitimate commercial entities
from continuing to provide controversial but valid services. Some may feel the
need to deliberately provide inaccurate or misleading WHOIS information. This
would be counteractive to its purpose.
I urge you to respect internet users' rights to privacy and due process.
- Everyone deserves the right to privacy.
- No one’s personal information should be unwillingly revealed without a court
order, regardless of whether the request comes from a private individual or law
enforcement agency.
Private information should be kept private.
Thank you.
