I am writing in support of the Verisign letter.
Trademark issues have been extensively discussed in this comment thread.
I want to include a different issue.
New business creation.
By having the IDN.com and the IDN.(IDN com equivalent) protected from
divergent ownership, this will permit enormous new online business creation.
The issue is not about grandfathering the current IDN.com name ownership to
current trademark and brand owners.
I believe ICANN should agree to the Verisign roadmap, so new registrants
that get both the IDN.com and the IDN.IDN in the correct language, have a
strong chance for creating vibrant sustainable new firms and services.
It is simply a prudent business process for companies and individuals to
have strong infrastructure support so that the two domains can support a
strong unified online presence.
