As a second FYI, other publications have called me with similar questions and I
have given the same answers. Again, this only relates to .us, but to the
extent reporters are trying to make a link to the GNSO process, I wanted you
all to be aware.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: [gnso-dow123] Call from the Washington Post
All,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I received a call from the Washington
Post (in the United States) interviewing me on the recent announcement in .us
whereby registrars offering Proxy Domain Name registration services were
required to cease offering those services. I felt it was important to make you
all aware about the interview as the reporter also knew that I was one of the
Whois Task Force Co-Chairs and asked me several questions about the work of the
task force.
On each occasion I made it clear to him that my involvement in .us had
absolutely no effect on the policies with respect to the gTLDs. The .us ccTLD
is administered by the United States Government, whereas the policies of the
gTLDs are handled through the ICANN policy development process. In addition, I
told him that policies implemented in .us had no consequence in the ICANN world
even thought the United States Department of Commerce has some involvement in
both.
With respect to the work on the task force, the reporter asked me whether the
Whois Task Force was going to recommend a proxy service or whether I thought
proxy services were a good idea. I explained to him that there are arguments
on all sides of the Whois debate, the work of the task force was ongoing and
that the Task Force has not formed any conclusions as to how these issues will
be worked out. I explained to him that the Task Force was considering all of
the issues involved and that I thought it was important for as many people as
possible to get involved in the policy process.
Again, I wanted to let you all know that I made it clear that my .us and even
.biz positions were separate and apart from my role as co-chair of the Whois
Task Force. I can't promise, however, that the article will reflect everything
as I have stated (as that should be coming out tomorrow).
Please let me know if you have any questions. Again, I just felt it was
important for you all to know before the article comes out..
