In the past few weeks I became aware of a company that our Naming
business team at VeriSign was using to provide some expertise with
regard to the issue of fast flux. The name of the company is
Karmasphere and here is a brief company description from their CEO
Martin Hall.
"Karmasphere improves business decisions about who to interact with
online. Our cloud computing services integrate hundreds of data sources,
network analytics and forensics, to improve, accelerate and automate
decisions about who to trust on the Internet. Whether it's a web site
visit, an email interaction or an online transaction, we improve the
decision about the interaction based on scientific analysis of the
identities behind it.
"Karmasphere's unique network analytics and real time forensics turn
myriad data sources into highly predictive scores and data services
about IP addresses, domain names, URLs, email addresses and other
attributes of online identities. The analytics are highly flexible,
using layers of mathematical models to produce high-confidence detection
rates at over 90% with low false positives."
After getting more information for my own benefit and then having the
opportunity to meet Martin in-person, it seemed to me that Martin could
be a very valuable resource for the Fast Flux Working Group.
Karmasphere has added a lot of value to our efforts including the work
they have done with fast flux.
I fully recognize that this is pretty late in the game and that the WG
is in the home stretch of preparing an initial report, but I at least
wanted to introduce Martin to the WG in case he can add some value at
this stage of your work. I know that the group has been very interested
in getting more data and I believe that Karmasphere may be able to help
in that regard. I realize that it may be too late for gathering and
analyzing data at this stage, but becoming aware of a possible new
resource for fast flux data might be useful as you consider possible
next steps.
Martin is willing to join the WG if that is acceptable. Or, if it is
preferred, he could just serve as an expert consulted by the WG. I have
warned him that it would be his responsibility to come up to speed on
his own so that the WG does not have to backtrack and he has already
started doing that.
Please let me know as soon as possible if it is okay for Martin to join
the group or if you would rather use him as an expert. In either case I
will provide his contact information.
