+ Happens all the time. Registrants don't know/care to know the difference
between registries and registrars, much less registries and alternate root
system players. If you are the authorized registry for a given gTLD, and
some other alternate system player offers a name that is considered by the
registrant (or marketed to the registrant) as "equivalent" - the registrant
is often going on the established reputation of the gTLD registry operator,
the sponsoring organization behind it (for sTLDs), etc.
This is not impossible in the ccTLD area also.
