I suggest that we consider changing the word 'specialist' to 'personal'. I
doubt that any of the GAC members would consider themselves 'specialists'. I
think I understand the intent, i.e., accommodate the issue that GAC reps cannot
speak for the GAC or their governments in a WG, and I think that using the word
'personal' might do that.

Making that change and some other tweaks, here is a revision of the
communication:

"Dear Heather,

As you and your colleagues on the ICANN GAC are aware, the GNSO Council
initiated a PDP on the issue of the protection of IGO and INGO names and the
work of the relevant WG is in progress. Indeed, we provided an update of the
work of the working group to the GAC at our joint meeting in Durban and
appreciated the opportunity to do so.

During the ICANN meeting in in Durban there was a productive meeting of the IGO
/ INGO WG and I have since been approached by the chair of the WG for potential
assistance in the form of specialistpersonal input from interested members of
the GAC. I am cognisant of the on-going work between the GNSO and the GAC, in
collaboration with the BGRC WG, to develop more effective early engagement of
the GAC in policy work and do not want to pre-empt that. However, I am also
aware of the exceptionally high importance that the protection of the IGO and
INGO names has in the view of the GAC and the urgency of the matter.

Therefore, in response to views expressed in the course of the deliberations of
the IGO / INGO WG that specialist some personal input from a few interested GAC
participants and/or from you could assistprovide the opportunity for the WG to
possibly get clarification on GAC recommendations and thereby speed up WG
deliberations, I am writing to request that you consider facilitating this.
Ideally this will take the One form this could take is for of interested
members of the GAC to participate in a single meeting of the WG in order to
shed light on questions that have arisen recently. If you have other
suggestions about how to accomplish this, we welcome them.

Thank-you for you and your colleagues' consideration of this request for
assistance.

Best wishes,

Jonathan"

All,
in preparation of our call later today, please find below the proposed
communication to the GAC. I will provide a bit of background during the call.

Thomas

Thomas,

Thank-you for bringing me up to speed with the work of the IGO / INGO PDP WG.
I understand that it would be useful to work of the WG to get direct input /
clarification from the GAC if at all possible.
Therefore, it will be helpful if I could write to Heather Dryden and seek
input. Please see a draft of such a letter below.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Dear Heather,

As you and your colleagues on the ICANN GAC are aware, the GNSO Council
initiated a PDP on the issue of the protection of IGO and INGO names and the
work of the relevant WG is in progress. Indeed, we provided an update of the
work of the working group to the GAC at our joint meeting in Durban and
appreciated the opportunity to do so.

During the ICANN meeting in in Durban there was a productive meeting of the IGO
/ INGO WG and I have since been approached by the chair of the WG for potential
assistance in the form of specialist input from interested members of the GAC.

Therefore, in response to views expressed in course of the deliberations of the
IGO / INGO WG that specialist input could assist, I am writing to request that
you consider providing such input. Ideally this will take the form of
interested members of the GAC participating in a single meeting of the WG in
order to shed light on questions that have arisen recently.

Thank-you for you and your colleagues consideration of this request for
assistance.

Best wishes,

Jonathan
