Thank you, Mary.
To be frank, I find it alarming that the NGPC has decided to extend temporary
protections of IGO acronyms, including "ISO" - in particular in light of
ongoing sunrise periods, in which trademark owners of terms matching those
acronyms might be barred from participating (?).
January 23 cannot come soon enough.
Sincerely,
Claudia (ISO)

Subject: [gnso-igo-ingo] New Board (NGPC) resolution and update
Dear WG members,
We thought you might be interested to know that the ICANN Board, acting through
its New gTLD Program Committee (NGPC), met on 9 January 2014 and passed the
following resolution extending the temporary protections for certain IGO
identifiers first issued in July 2013 (via implementation through Specification
5 of the New gTLD Registry Agreement) as the Board, GAC, staff and community
continue to work through the implementation issues. You'll notice that in the
rationale for its resolution (required by the ICANN Bylaws) the NGPC
specifically noted the work done by this WG and our Final Report:
http://www.icann.org/en/groups/board/documents/resolutions-new-gtld-09jan14-en.htm#2.d.i
The public comment period for the Final Report closed on 8 January 2014. The
GNSO Council has been asked to approve its report on the recommendations for
sending on to the ICANN Board at the next Council meeting on 23 January 2014:
http://gnso.icann.org/en/meetings/agenda-council-23jan14-en.htm. The Board will
take up consideration of the recommendations following GNSO Council approval of
its report.
The Preliminary Issue Report on access to the curative rights protection
mechanisms of the UDRP and URS is in preparation, and staff expects to be able
to publish it for the requisite public comment period by the end of January.
Following the close of that public comment period, staff will prepare a Final
Issue Report incorporating public feedback and input for review and voting on a
possible PDP by the GNSO Council.
We hope you all had a happy and festive holiday break, and thank you again for
all the hard work that went into the recommendations and Final Report.
Cheers
Mary
