Adobe Chat Transcript for 07 May 2013:
Marika Konings:Welcome to the 'thick' Whois PDP Working Group Meeting of 7 May
2013
Amr Elsadr:Hi..., just joined the call.
Amr Elsadr:Sorry..., am I early?! :) My clock says we're 2 minutes after the
hour.
Amr Elsadr:Cool. Thnx.
Volker Greimann:hello
Volker Greimann:still need to dial in
Alan Greenberg:I'm on. not sure if I made it before role call
Nathalie Peregrine:You were on the roll call
Nathalie Peregrine:ANd Frederic Guillemaut has joined the call
Don Blumenthal - Public Interest Registry:Either the person went on mute or
the dog won.
Nathalie Peregrine:Illiya Bazlyankov has joined the call
Alan Greenberg:Something about sleeping dogs?
Nathalie Peregrine:Carolyn Hoover has just joined the AC room
Carolyn Hoover:Sorry - unexpected meeting...
Nathalie Peregrine:Tim Ruiz has joined th call
Tim Ruiz:Sorry to join so late.
Tim Ruiz:Regarding Carolyn's comment: Having thick Whois data provides
opportunities for additional registry services that are not available to thin
registries. So a major registry like .com becoming thick may have some
competition issues. I think that is worth at least pointing out.
Marc Anderson:Tim, do you have an example on what kind of registry service a
Thick Registry could offer that a thin registry could not?
Tim Ruiz:In addition to my previous comment, the transition of 120 million
domains will certianly hae an impact on cost, but that is something to note
elsewhere.
Tim Ruiz:Privacy, aftermarket domian services, other possibly direct to
consumer services.
Tim Ruiz:It may be limited to some extent by their agreement with ICANN or
their agreement with registrars, but the latter can certainly be changed.
Tim Ruiz:I am not advocating that these are reasons not to go thick ( I
personally think thick is good),
Marc Anderson:Tim, I think you make some good points. Could you post that
via email following the meeting?
Tim Ruiz:Sure.
Carolyn Hoover:Yes - this is the type of information that I was thinking
might be out there.
Alan Greenberg:The main gist is that there *may* be issues wrt privacy in the
future, but those issues will apply to other gTLDs as as well, and thus will
need to be addressed by ICANN. The agreement of the RrSG implies that they
perceive no IMMEDIATE issue. So although privacy issues may become a
substantive issue in the future, and should certainly be part of the
investigation of a replacement for Whois, it is not a reason to proceed with
this PDP WG recommending thick Whois for all.
Alan Greenberg:Correct version:
Alan Greenberg:The main gist is that there *may* (or probably?) be issues
with respect to privacy in the future, but those issues will apply to other
gTLDs as well, and thus will need to be addressed by ICANN. Existing Ry policy
and practice allow flexibility when needed, and the new RAA provides similar
options for registrars. The agreement of the RrSG implies that they perceive no
IMMEDIATE issue. So although privacy issues may become a substantive issue in
the future, and should certainly be part of the investigation of a replacement
for Whois, it is not a reason to not proceed with this PDP WG recommending
thick Whois for all.
steve metalitz:I basically agree with Alan's summary.
Amr Elsadr:I agree with Don. I read this paper as applicable to both existing
and future.
Amr Elsadr:...existing and future gTLDs.
marie-laure lemineur:agree with Don and Marc's comments
Don Blumenthal - Public Interest Registry:Good point. Thick could simplify
might some of the jurisdictional questions.
Don Blumenthal - Public Interest Registry:Gee thanks
Amr Elsadr:One more tip of the hat to Don in his effort for this ST.
steve metalitz:+1 @ Amr
marie-laure lemineur:+1@Amr
Volker Greimann:registrar escrow is free
Frederic Guillemaut - Mailclub:but not the developpement for escrowing
Volker Greimann:of course
Volker Greimann:just the actual cost of the service provider is zero.
Frederic Guillemaut - Mailclub:in fact registrar escrow is paid for by icann
no ?
Tim Ruiz:Agree with Alan.
Tim Ruiz:thanks mikey
Amr Elsadr:Thanks everyone.
marie-laure lemineur: thks. bye
