Hello,
I agree that in most .foo TLDs domains will never be traded for such
prices, however, some domain names such as sex.web or casino.vegas
conceivably will in all likelyhood be very expensive for registrants.
Many registries today have implemented a system allowing them to profit
directly from interesting and sought-after domain names in the launch
phase without cutting out equal access. Take the .asia launch as an
example, where the launch phase was combined with an auction for domain
names with multiple applications.
As a proponent of a one system fits all proposal, I agree with Erics
assessment that it is dangerous to excempt new registries from the equal
access provisions. By allowing registries to own or co-own a registrar,
we will ensure all new registries will have access to market from their
launch, while by ensuring equal access we ensure competition, better
access as well as better consumer service and lower overall prices. Most
new TLDs have an uphill struggle ahead of them for recognition and a
share of the market. The registrar system is flexible enough to allow
all different kinds of new ideas in the new TLDs to bloom.

How many of these names attracting high values were not in .com?
Hmm, by your own stated examples I see....none were.
.Com has market power. There is no debate about that.
<Sigh. How many times do I have to point this out?>
-----Original Message-----
sex.com went for $14m, fund.com went for pennies under $10m, porn.com
went for $9.5m, {business and diamonds}.com went for $7.5 each, and
beer.com went for $7m. AsSeenOnTV.com went for pennies over $5m, and
{korea, casino and seo}.com went for $5m each.
The price points for each of these for the random standard 2010 (or
whenever) application going through sunrise and landrush will be lower
than for .com, but significantly higher than the price point for any
remaining strings after the first 100k have been harvested by the
business entity ICANN selects as the registry operator and which has
this one-time value extraction permit.
