The real cost of a domain-name-year is sub-dollar, (...)
While this is certainly true for those established gTLDs with a certain
number of registrations, it certainly should be reconsidered for smaller
gTLDs, where the overhead per domain name is much larger. For most new
gTLD, the initial investment for the application also has to be factored
into the real cost of a domain name. Considering many new gTLDs are
expected to be no larger than 30-50k domain names, the real cost per
domain is well above a dollar.
