Dear Milton: in most countries the trademark registration fees cover
costs, so there are no tax dollars involved. In addition, the purpose of
trademark registries is in essence quite similar to those of domain name
registries: They register a name in exchange for money. Costs for
publication and access of registration information will be included in
the registration fee and there is no separat charge. 
I don't want to side track from the main issue. My point was simply to
show that the free access to relevant data is common practice in a
related field.

Well, yes, Leo but those are governmental agencies serving a public
purpose funded via tax dollars. 
Are you proposing that registrars be tax-supported?
