Time to start and tune by iteration
Karl chose the word "heavy-handed". Many people probably expected a "lighter" set of principles. Others may complain that they are too elastic, or too extensive. Yet there is a reason why, precisely, the principles must have some weight, why they must reach out and why they must have some elasticity. The DNS is not just anchored in the (technical) DNS root. The solid roots of the DNS are people's minds. The principles for new TLDs must somehow tie into people's minds (not just mine and not just Karl's), very much like the roots of a tree tie into the ground. As a tree grows, its roots must grow. If the roots did not spread, the tree would fall. If the roots were hard as stone, they would break too easily. Overall, the PDP has brought a viable foundation for new TLDs. Of course it will evolve. But now is the time for the ongoing new TLD process, with new TLD application cycles starting very 6 months. If a rule needs to be adapted, this can always be done for future cycles. The biggest damage are further delays. Or do we want to further delay all new TLDs for the sake of .exe? Werner Staub |
