Dear ICANN,
Many countries around the world are unhappy that the overseer of the domain
name system is US-based and highly susceptible to US lobbying. To continue to
be credible, and fend off attempts by other (perhaps less tolerant) parts of
the world to control the internet, ICANN has to prove that it is accountable.
The independent review is the final accountability mechanism for ICANN, and was
devised by ICANN itself. To block the implementation of the findings of that
review is to undermine the trust invested in ICANN by the Internet community.
Picking and choosing elements of the Panel's declaration, or adding unnecessary
procedural steps in adopting the review's findings, would be a clear sign to
the global Internet community that the organization cannot be relied upon to do
its job fairly and objectively.
ICM is a credible company with serious management and solid backing, and
operating a .xxx domain would help immensely in protecting our children from
the extremes of net pornography, which recent history shows us is unstoppable.
I urge you to abide by the declaration of the Independent Review Panel and sign
a registry agreement with ICM, without further delay.
Make the responsible choice by approving .xxx now.
Andrew Perkins
