Dear ICANN,
It is interesting to note that all of the comments in this
forum seem to carry a common theme ? that of a Conspiracy
Theory that the .INFO registry is about to raise prices for
selective domains under their contract. It is too
coincidental - someone is stoking the flames here, at the
last minute, hoping none of the regular internet users like
us will check this forum on the last day of the comment
period.
Firstly, the .INFO registry is unique among the three
registries whose contracts are under review for being the
most aggressive registry in terms of reducing the price and
improving the affordability of the .INFO domain. For almost
three years now they have maintained the price of ANY .INFO
domain name at the lowest industry price and have made it
available to any registrar who is accredited in .INFO.
Secondly, the .INFO registry is unlikely to selectively or
otherwise raise prices on its domain; there is just too much
competition from competing TLDs for that, and this
competition will only increase as ICANN speeds up the
addition of more new TLDs
(http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-06jul05.htm).
I exhort ICANN, its staff and its Board to set aside the
Conspiracy Theorists on this comment forum who claim that
INFO will be a unfriendly domain because of the lifting of
price controls. As Vint Cerf rightly said, predatory pricing
is commercial suicide for a young registry like .INFO.
Economic studies in the United States have shown that price
controls have negatively impacted R&D in the pharmaceutical
industry. Price controls stifle innovation, stunt progress
and impede competition. We don't have to worry about .INFO
raising prices, their entire five year history is pointed
the opposite direction!
Let free enterprise and the market based economy dictate the
success of domains, not a bunch of domain kiters.
Sincerely,
Alison Moser
