MARQUES (Association of European Trade Mark Owners) Comments on IRT Recommendations
Dear Sirs, By way of introduction, I am the External Relations Officer of MARQUES, the Association of European Trade Mark Owners. MARQUES represents over 750 trade mark owners and trade mark law professionals in membership and is very active in different fields of Intellectual Property Law with a view of covering the areas of law that are relevant for brand protection. The goal of this Association is to educate and promote the professional development of brand owners in the selection, management, protection and exploitation of their trademarks and other IP rights within a global economy, to create a forum for the free exchange of ideas and information and to provide an effective platform for the representation of their interests. Even if MARQUES is based in Europe, it has members from around the world. Our members include some of the best known brands in the world. For example, our Council of Directors alone features representatives from Nestle, Diageo, Coty, Syngenta, Hoffman La Roche, Bacardi, Red Bull, Sara Lee, Gucci, Velux, InBev, DSM, GlaxoSmithKline, Tetra Pak etc. plus half a dozen leading European law firms. MARQUES has estimated that its members together own upwards of 2 million domain names, many of them gTLDs. MARQUES membership accordingly constitutes a very substantial component of the Internet Stakeholder constituency. Please, for further information, feel free to consult www.marques.org. MARQUES is closely following ICANN's initiative related to the implementation of new gTLDs and is pleased to submit its comments to the Report of the IRT on Trademark Protection Issues. Please find the document attached. This paper is signed by the Cyberspace Team of MARQUES. Should you require any further information or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely, Cristina Duch External Relations Officer MARQUES <mailto:cduch@xxxxxxxxxxx> cduch@xxxxxxxxxxx Tel. +34 659078784 Attachment:
