Dear colleagues,
Is anyone aware of a list of likely IDN single-character ccTLDs?
The only ones of which I am aware
1. either feel incomplete:
Japanese 日 or 和 for Japan
Korean 한 for South Korea (in hangul, the only non-Han script example here)
Chinese 中 for mainland China, 台 or 臺 for Taiwan; 汉 or 漢 and 华 or 華 may also
indicate China;
Chinese and 英 for the UK, 法 for France (but also means ‘law’), 德 for Germany
and 俄 for Russia
2. or are historical:
Chinese dynasties: 夏 (also ‘summer’), 商 (also ‘commerce’), 秦, 新 (also ‘new’),
隋, 唐, 金 (also ‘gold’), 元 (also yuan, the Chinese currency), 明, 清
To be honest, I cannot imagine even any of the above actually being applied
for. Perhaps there are Arabic or Devanagari candidates.
Regards,
Chris Dillon.

Subject: Response on Single Character IDN TLDs [RE: [jig] JIG MP3 8 November
2011]
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the quick and constructive comments on the matter.
Please find attached revised letter incorporating the comments:
1. single-syllable-single-word, yes, the idea is to point out the inequity that
such TLDs are acceptable for English (e.g. ".word") but not for some languages
(e.g. Chinese single word TLDs). Hopefully the edits explained it better.
2. included that SSAC members were involved in the development of the report
3. included stronger wording for Board to act
4. explained where the board may have inadvertently tied the implementation for
IDN ccTLDs and IDN gTLDs together and asked for clarification
5. included description to indicate that we received no objections from ACs
With regards to process, as discussed in Dakar, it is probably best to pass it
to the respective councils, and upon the mutual resolution by the 2 councils,
have the council chairs forward the letter to the board.
Please find also attached a draft motion for consideration by the councils.
We will also look to circulate this to the ccNSO and GNSO councils for their
considerations.
