Dear Chairman Dengate Thrush and Members of the Board:
I am writing to voice my concerns about the request for the .Jobs charter
expansion submitted by Employ Media. While my business would not be
adversely affected by this change, my clients' businesses would be. They are
employers with significant investments in branding, which is primarily
presented on their careers sites through content that is carefully crafted
to optimize search engine marketing. The proliferation of .jobs domains
would not only diminish their results from SEM/SEO, it would essentially
lead candidates to the "back door," rendering their careers sites useless -
and their investments wasted.
The offer of "free" job postings (often touted by Employ Media as the big
benefit) may entice companies during these difficult economic times, but the
downstream implications could all but obliterate their unique value
propositions and/or end up costing them more than they would have ever
imagined. After all, if they decide they want to stand out in the crowd with
a premium position or an enhanced posting, it will be Employ Media to say
what that's worth. Then EM can fall back on, "Well, you get what you pay
for!"
When one company, which refers to itself as "Universe," controls the
universe, the concept of fair negotiation and trade disappears. I do hope
you will reject Employ Media's request. Thank you for the opportunity to
share my thoughts.
Yours respectfully,
Carol Barber, Founder & Managing Partner
