Initial Obversations
I think that a review of the accreditation process is probably a good thing and some of the points that have been raised by Danny Younger and others are very valid. I would, however, be concerned that the issues that arose with the collapse of RegisterFly could cloud people's judgement. Nobody can deny that the fallout from RegisterFly's collapse has hurt the entire industry at some level. Registrants, resellers, registries and registrars are all affected when a large company runs into difficulties. However the internet in 2007 is a business. While it may serve the community on many levels it is operated by businesses and sometimes the businesses involved will run into problems and possibly fail. While this may be sad and unfortunate it should not lead to widespread paranoia. From the original announcement (http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-27jul07.htm) "Requiring registrars to escrow contact information for customers who register domain names using Whois privacy and Whois proxy services." While that seems like a sane option, surely a lot of this would be resolved via the current debate / discussions on "whois" in general? It also works on the premise that the registrant has provided valid contact information during the registration process. No matter what safeguards or procedures maybe put in place people who wish to avoid the measures will always find a way of doing so.
