Even if they eliminated the $2000 fee, the problem is that most people are
unable to always send email from the relay mail server MX which is listed for
their domain in DNS. Some examples are when people travel or if they use a
different ISP for their domain (web site) than the ISP they connect to internet
with. There are technical ways to route email through different ISP's server
for your domain but it requires SMTP authentication methods (or POP before
SMTP) which are not well implemented and well understood. If SMTP
authentication was well implemented and understood, then we wouldn't need .mail
to prevent forgery.
So the .mail is only useful to people or organizations who can send their email
in a very strict way. Even you lower the price, the majority of SENDERS can't
use .mail as proposed. ALL recipients will be forced to recognize .mail in
order for it to succeed in it's goal of helping SENDERS.
