The .mobi proposal appears to be looking at domain names from the wrong end.

All other domain names have the section indicating the intended protocol
used to contact a specific host at the left hand end, whereas .mobi
indicates this at the right hand end.
All other TLDs, and indeed ccTLDs, use the right hand end to indicate the
type of entity that "owns" the domain name.
As previously commented, wap. is a recognised industry standard for a server
intended to be accessed via a WAP browser, in the same way that www. is for
a server intended to be accessed via a web browser, and smtp for a server
intended to accept smtp delivery of mail.

If .mobi is approved, will this lead to applications for .www .smtp and
.pop?
