The GNSO Should Find a Compromise Position
To the GNSO Council and Everyone Else Reading These Forums, For too long the debate over the uses of the whois database and the information that is publicly available has been played as a zero sum game by both the legal community and the privacy advocates. As a former member of the Council, an IP attorney and individual domain name registrant, I do not understand why it is so difficult to craft a policy that will both: (a) allow law enforcement, network administrators, and companies interested in enforcing their legal rights to contact a registrant quickly and easily; and (b) prevent people from driving to the homes of domain name registrants. The Operational Point of Contact proposal strikes me as a simple and reasonable compromise.
