While I heartily agree that something should be done to help children and
people that wish to be protected from the harsher aspects of the real world
that most of us actually live in, I do not think people that wish to view
mature subject matter should bear the entire burden of seperating themselves
from the rest of the world.
Would .XXX be the place to show extreme violence ( i.e.Religious zealots
beheading foreigners trying to bring peace and freedom to the world,
hatemongers of all creeds, etc) and other mature subject matter?
.com stands for "commercial" right? children should Not be surfing "commercial"
material aimed at their pocketbooks and wallets.
If a new domain catagory is to be created, how about .generalpublic or
.religion or .kids? Parents could then easily restrict their computers to only
the domains that they approve for their kids and those they wish to shelter
from the harsher aspects of the true world.
The major offenders that actually pose the real dangers that we ALL want to
protect our children from are mostly offshore and extremely difficult to find,
regulate or prosecute. Finding ways to locate, punish, and remove the true
offenders is the best way to fight the real bad guys. The most grevious
offenders are apparently out of reach. Lets find ways to reach the real bad
guys and control them.
For example, Reporting sites should be readily available to those of us that
find the problem sites. If the government wants to get involved, maybe they
could put up sites for concerned citizens to report illegal activity. Then
spend all this time, money, and effort shutting them down.
Its much more difficult to change .com because it has so much invested in it
already. Lets create safe domains aimed at children and/or the general public
rather than try to recreate or uncreate that which already exists.
Lastly, lets find ways and the energy to enforce existing laws. Most law
abiding citizens would welcome an easy way to report problems to someone that
can actually do something to help get rid of the real problems.
