FBI Arrests Eight in McDonald's Game Fraud
By Chris Doering
WASHINGTON
(Reuters) - Eight people were arrested for allegedly defrauding fast-food giant McDonald's
Corp.'s (NYSE:MCD - news) popular ``Monopoly'' and ``Who Wants to Be Millionaire''
promotions, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Tuesday.
According to the
FBI, the eight netted hundreds of thousands of dollars from their scheme.
The agency
said Jerome Jacobson, who worked for Simon Marketing Inc., a unit of Simon Worldwide
Inc. (NasdaqNM:SWWI - news), embezzled winning game pieces and gave them to friends
and associates who recruited other participants to act as the winners, agreeing to
share the prizes with the recruiters and in turn Jacobson.
``Those involved in
this type of corruption will find out breaking the law is no game,'' Attorney General
John Ashcroft said in a statement. ``THIS FRAUD SCHEME DENIED McDONALD'S CUSTOMERS
A FAIR AND EQUAL CHANCE OF WINNING.''
