Three-letter strings for use in an address space are not the intellectual property of anybody.  They're meaningful only inasmuch as they're adopted as part of a particular naming system.  Where the Internet is concerned, they don't exist in the naming system until ICANN approves them, and the fact that some script kiddies set up a server that pretended they existed makes no difference.
