I have a guess as to what might have happened, based on my own recent experience.  It turns out that the .info WHOIS is case sensitive.  You must type domain names in all lowercase for them to be found correctly.  I found this out recently when I was looking up a name I knew to already be taken, and it said it was available; it turns out I had entered it in all uppercase.  When I switched to lowercase, it showed up as taken as I expected.
