I'm not against the existence of trademarks.  They serve a valid function.  It's just that they've been greatly overextended in recent years, upsetting the delicate balance formerly present.  Similar overextensions have happened with regard to copyrights and patents lately.  Laws that once tried to carefully balance the needs of individual creators, corporate producers, and consumers, now are tilted heavily in the direction of large corporate interests.  Laws that once tried to keep consumers from getting cheated by inferior products masquerading as being from a trusted producer now are used to let corporations claim to have exclusive ownership of common English words. That's what many of us are opposing.
