I'm not against the existence of trademarks. They serve a valid function.
It's just that they've been greatly overextended in recent years, upsetting the delicate
balance formerly present. Similar overextensions have happened with regard
to copyrights and patents lately. Laws that once tried to carefully balance
the needs of individual creators, corporate producers, and consumers, now are tilted
heavily in the direction of large corporate interests. Laws that once tried
to keep consumers from getting cheated by inferior products masquerading as being
from a trusted producer now are used to let corporations claim to have exclusive
ownership of common English words. That's what many of us are opposing.
