This extract from yesterday's TheRegister.co.uk confuses me:Afilias - the registrar
behind the new .info top-level domain name - has delayed/extended its roll-out of
new addresses for three days.
Citing the US terrorist attacks, the company will
now allow trademark holders to register corresponding domains until 21 September,
as opposed to 18 September previously. All such addresses should then be able on
the Internet from 27 September. The public land-grab is then set to begin on 1 October.
In a press release, the company said: "With deference to all affected by the tragic
circumstances surrounding the events of September 11, Afilias felt it necessary to
make some schedule changes to ensure fairness to all registrants, and the registrars
who serve them."
It didn't feel the need to mention the fact that the extra three
days will give pirates even more time to add to the thousands of wrongly assigned
domains that its system had categorically failed to prevent.
It also ignored the
fact that one of its founding members quit the conglomerate a fortnight ago due to
its poor handling of the situation. And nothing about the new company - Afilias USA
- that it set up in the aftermath and may in fact be illegal.
