What possible basis is there for people with a major commercial interest in the decisions
of ICANN to make important decisions and act as watchdogs of themselves? The obvious
way for ICANN to act transparantly (as they always claim) would be to remove all
registrars and vested interests from their Board or organisation.
To be quite honest,
if I dared to "think the unthinkable" and argue laterally, I would propose that all
registrars should be non-commercial organisations, and any profits earned should
in every case be given to charity.
This would truly test the motives and methods
of people involved, and guarantee the true interests of customers and the internet
community as a whole.
There is no real reason why this should not be implemented.
I would encourage an inter-governmental campaign to bring this about, with excellent
benefits for charity, and transparant honesty for customers.
