Richy wrote, "... all registrars should be non-commercial organisations, and any
profits earned should in every case be given to charity. This would truly test
the motives and methods of people involved, and guarantee the true interests of customers
and the internet community as a whole. There is no real reason why this should
not be implemented. I would encourage an inter-governmental campaign to bring this
about, with excellent benefits for charity, and transparant honesty for customers." I
suggest that each TLD Registry be nonprofit [as Richy mentioned for registrars].
The need for impartiality and financial disinterest at registries is necessary for
fairness. Since they are monopolies by design, registries should not be biased
toward any registrar or registrars, including their members. However, registrars
should be forprofit to increase the incentive to serve their customers' interests.
Otherwise, why have competing registrars at all? Why not replace registrars
with registries? [Rhetorical questions.]
