I agree with you... I'm another who doesn't like the way ICANN is run, but who doesn't think the proper solution is to fragment the namespace by working around them.  Among the current "alternative roots", there already is more than one contending ".biz" domain, and that's nothing compared to the chaos that would erupt if any of the alternative domains actually caught on and brought all the vultures out of the woodwork to try to set up more of them themselves in order to "claim" every string they could think of as a TLD.
