Afilias wants dot info to be a truly "global domain"....IN mining through the obscure foreign registars first they probably figured they would pick up a lot of "non us" customers... This is just an opinion and pure speculation, but if they did do this, it is not a bad idea.  To make a domain go, you need world wide exposure....That is why I can't wait for Image Online Design's dot web to be uploaded...Their dot web registry is about as global as you can get.
