ICANN's Mission is Largely OverWhy do you think there will be any more "rounds"
?
The U.S. Government has now taken back control of the legacy
root servers.
They have made decisions about TLDs without
needing ICANN's opinion. ICANN was
set up to do Proof-of-Concept
testing. It now appears that the testing is coming
to a close.
Companies like IOD, New.Net and Name.Space are clearly ahead
of
the ICANN experiments. Volume is not the only criteria.
Now people can focus on
the Next Generation Internet, and
can build it knowing that in the next (round)
generation,
the playing field will be more level, and academic and
government
insiders will not be able to game the system as
they have with the IPv4 Internet.
