A better analogy is that we don't need 15 streets called
"Main" or "Broadway" etc. etc., because that does nothing but confuse and devalue
the concept of a street name. Domain extensions are not burger joints, newspapers
or radio stations they are LOCATION pointers pure and simple. They are meant for
one and only one reason and that is TO HELP THE PUBLIC NAVIGATE TO A DESTINATION
ON THE INTERNET... An extension should be descriptive, clear, universal (as much
as possible) and not confusingly similar to any other.. With regards to who or
what is managing the naming domain space, that is a completely seperate issue and
creating new extensions is neither the solution nor the answer..
