Afilias' latest policy amendment assures that all names that were registered during
Sunrise with no trademark information will be challenged on December 26 2001. The
exception is where registrars who made honest processing mistakes and didn't include
TM information will be given a chance to amend their data. Afilias claims that individuals
can't change their TM data however to avoid being challenged. Afilias' latest
amendment also states that although anyone can challenge a name before 26 December
2001, only genuine TM holders can register it in their own name or else they have
to let it drop into the pool of names for Sunrise II. From now on, hardcopy proof
will be required (that is, you can only register a name that you challenge if you
can prove that you own a TM for that name). This amendment is quite overdue of course,
but at least it's one step in the right direction to avoid squatters. The upshot
is that this person will lose these names and they will go back into the pool next
year (unless he is challenged by somebody who can prove that they own the TM first).
Cheers, Dave
