The intent of the new TLDs was to experiment with launching new domains of various
types, ranging from broad-based ones like .biz and .info to very specialized ones
like .museum and .aero. It was never intended that all of them would "compete
with .com" -- in fact, .museum is intended for noncommercial museum entities, so
it's competing more with .org than .com. The execution of the new TLD launches
has been screwed up in many ways, as amply documented on this forum, but I don't
fault the concept itself -- I agree with ICANN's idea of trying a variety of different
kinds of new TLD, both commercial and noncommercial and both broad and narrow based.
