I think of all the possible permutations of letters that have been exhausted in deciding the museum tld, .museum is the most appropriate, despite its longish length. Actually 6 letters isn't that long, it's just that we're conditioned to seeing shorter tlds.
Whether or not we need a museum tld is a diffrent matter. I would have thought there were more important tlds that would have a far higher demand.

A music tld for example would be much more widely appreciated, given the number of mp3s, radio stations and unsigned artists using the web as a means of broadcasting. .mus would be cool for music, but then so would .music. However .mus is appropriate in other languages and is shorter, so I guess that would be superior.
