Even though the introduction of new TLD’s will initially seem to open more name spaces
for companies, ventures and private people on the internet, the end deal will be
that existing domain name holders will reserve the name space in the new TLD’s to
protect their mark, dominant or company name on the Internet, the proliferation of
sexually oriented domains will increase due to the fact that this industry has never
been late in exploiting new concepts and ideas, and they will surely swamp the new
name spaces with applications. It would be far better to regulate usage of domain
names globally to ensure that a domain name reflects the company or ventures trading
name. Regulation of domain name delegation as such is not a hinder to the freedom
of speech, it is, when well coordinated, a guarantee that legal mark holders have
the right to inform of their wares and services on the Internet. We are moving
to an era where the Internet is truly becoming a tool of business and less a toy. ccTLD’s
should ensure that the “local” domain space is more attractive than generic names,
and owners of search engines and listing services should try to even out the bias
of their tools towards .com, .net, and .org in their services. By “glocalising”
the Internet domain name space, where ccTLD’s have the same “moral” status as the
generic TLD’s one will find that the expansion and proliferation of domain names
on the net will increase for the better of the whole Internet community, not just
the holders of the TLD’s.
