Even though the introduction of Top Level Domains is as inevitable as registering
more .COM domains, ICANN should be commended for finally addressing this issue. In
the grand scheme of things, ICANN has successfully introduced competition into the
registrar space. It is now time to introduce competition into the registry space
with the introduction of new registries and Top Level Domains.I would urge everyone
in the decision making process to remember the last six years work and not forget
any of it. Even the mistakes can be learnt from. Otherwise it will all be repeated,
pointlessly.
I would like to resubmit the early work of IANA to ICANN. The backlog
of TLD requests that exists is not that extensive. It should be noted that it is
the only list of TLD proposals that have come directly from the internet community
(all others have come from various closed-session committees). The list was compiled
by Jon Postel of the IANA, and posted to the iahc-discuss list on Thu, 5 Dec 1996.
