To allow trademark holders for specific industries to move to the web.. in other words Macdonalds (Restaurants) and Macdonalds (Clothing Store).  It's not right that Macdonalds the restaurant get's the right to Macdonalds.com just because they are a bigger company.  There should be a Macdonalds.food (for example) and a Macdonalds.clothes.  Both companies will be allowed to exist online and there will be NO consumer confusion.

Adding generic words like .shop or .web doesn't alleviate the problem at all, only exacerbates it and forces companies with domains already registered to refister the new .web and .stores (etc.) just to protect their trademark.  Only people benifitting from this are the domain name registrars! (who seem to be the only ones voting on this issue?)
