The US are the largest internet
consumers/providers in the whole world. Therefore I still would recommend common
TLD's like .com, .edu, .org, .net, .mil, to remain into place, just because
it would cost too much to make a change all over again. On the other hand, it is
ridiculous to have, e.g., a German based company to use the extension .com, 'cause
if you would stumble over it, you never would guess where it is based. Therefore,
except for the US, I would propose the following standard, which has been implemented
successfully in a number of countries: .co.de - .com in Germany .ac.de - .edu
in Germany .gv.de - .gov in Germany .nt.de - .net in Germany and so forth
for other countries. Just my 2 cents worth.
