"Last week, a bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate designed to make cybersquatting
a crime. Michigan Senator Spencer Abraham's Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection
Act would bring fines of up to $300,000 against individuals who register someone
else's trademarked domain name with the intent of selling it later."
Taken
from afternic.comThis is rediculous, obviously this guy is only tying to impress
and get into the pockets of big corps. with this one.
The people who should be
re-electing this guy don't even care about this issue.
It should read..If you are
the owner of a domain name that is similar to a trademark and you are not violating
the trademark owners rights in using the domain, the cost for the domain should be
at least 300,000.00 paid to the current registrant if you want to retain ownership.
C'mon
ICANN, domains are NOT trademarks! You only have a trademark issue when and only
when trademark law is being broken. Owning a domain is not breaking any trademark
laws. Using it to benefit from a trademark is, and this is the only time trademark
law should be discussed in the matter of domains.
When are corps and government
going to realize that domains were registered on a first come first served basis
and this right is the only thing that needs to be protected?
If a big corp wants
a domain name, let them pay for it..that will be the end of the story!
I'm sick
of politicians trying to get in the pant pockets of big corps and leaving the real
issues behind.
If you (ICANN) continue to turn these domains over to the corps
and leave the original registrants with nothing, there will be hell to pay, I guarantee
it. There are alot of smart lawyers who do not agree with this and they will get
the best of you (ICANN) after you do enough damage to start the legal wheels spinning
worldwide on this issue. Not to mention the people who have already been hurt by
this, they will have their day in court also.
One more thing, about letting retired
Judges hear these cases, this is wrong. Get some fresh blood in those seats, people
who understand today issues and are not stuck in their ways of old!
And for Spence
Abraham, PLEASE send him your comments on this proposed law and set him sraight about
the issues here!
